daily inspiration: understanding pessimism

Posted on: February 11, 2011

How can we get inspired by… pessimism?? Perhaps you struggle because you’re around people who are negative, cynical, distrustful… you get the idea. When I’m coaching public speaking and communication skills for everyday life, this is one of people’s biggest fears: “What if they don’t like me?”

I have a little theory around this: people who are cynical have simply been burned before, and have gotten jaded. Yet, deep down, they still want to be inspired. To be motivated, excited… all of it. But they’re scared to, because they don’t want to be hurt again.

So next time you encounter this – or find it occurring within yourself – don’t push them too hard. They want to be uplifted, but they may not be ready. Or, maybe they are. Stay true to your spirit… but go gentle on them. And meet them half-way.
